Conventions of film posters

In order to create a poster for my short film, Abracadabra, it is important I research what actual film posters are like.

Conventions of film posters:

  • must be eye-catching and captivating to the audience 
  • must be a focal picture that will draw in the audience eye 
  • title displayed in a large, eye-catching font 
  • clearly defines the film genre 
  • should be designed to attract the largest audience possible 
  • usually an indication of when the film is being released - either a date or 'Coming soon', although they are sometimes less specific, for example they might say "In cinemas this summer" 
  • information on the directors and production company is often displayed in a billing block at the bottom of the poster 
  • there could be reviews or titles of other films that the company has made

Conventions of short films

These are conventions of short films: Characters - Short films tend to stick to 2 or 3 main characters. Short films don't have time to create deep backstory for the characters, therefore character numbers are kept low in short films to allow the viewer to relate to the characters in a small amount of time.  Twist - Short films nearly always contain a 'twist'. Introduction

In lower sixth, I had to create a film opening. I chose mine as thriller, and had to create scripts, a storyboard, a shot list, and organise the filming schedule as the preproduction process. After the filming was finished, I edited it so it would be like a real film opening.

Examples of conventional lifestyle in films

In my short film, Abracadabra, I want the conventional lifestyle to be made clear. I think that will make the main character, Ben, more relatable as he doesn't want to be a part of the conventional lifestyle, and wants to persue his dream of being a magician, so that he will stand out. In the short film, The Black Hole, the (only) character in it, is shown to be a part of a conventional lifestyle. He is working in a typical office, and seems to be unhappy. This makes the existance of the magical black hole have more effect. In Ferris Bueller's Day Off,  Ferris lives in a safe, house, and has a typical family and goes to a typical highschool. Despite having a conventional lifestyle, he is a free spirit. In, Edward Scissorhands, the neighborhood is conventional. This contrasts with the location of where Edward came from.
