 Experimental film, experimental cinema or avant-garde cinema is a mode of filmmaking that rigorously re-evaluates cinematic conventions and explores non-narrative forms and alternatives to traditional narratives or methods of working.

Casting - other characters

Other than the lead character, Ben, the characters in my short film, Abracadabra, are his father and mother, and potentially a teacher. My mum will be portraying Ben's mum.  She will need to be wearing simple clothes, such as trousers, and perhaps a loose cardigan, and comfortable shirt. Her hair will be simple, perhaps just down, or tied up. The dad will be portrayed by my stepfather. He will also be dressed conventionally, such has having a button shirt, trousers, and a tie, that he will be shown wearing undone. This connects with the boring, conventional lifestyle that is shown in the short film, that Ben does not want to be a part of. If there is a teacher character in it, he would be portrayed by my media teacher, Craig. My mum (Polly Walker) is actually a professional actress, so her mindset should be helpful to the film.

Target audience for short films

The short film industry's audience is quite specific compared that of the mainstream audience of larger full length films. There are two main groups of people who will be familiar with short films; unemployed students seeking a future in the film industry and people who are already successful in the industry. Demographics  These employed people working in the industry would be placed between the demographic social groups A to C1. These industry professionals and investors may be looking at the short films to find potential in a director, producer, or writer to work for them for the particular company. The student sector of the audience would be generally placed in the social group E because they are unemployed but most likely to be from a background in the A to C1 categories. They would be viewing the films for inspiration for their own work as an amateur film maker. Examples of conventional lifestyle in films

In my short film, Abracadabra, I want the conventional lifestyle to be made clear. I think that will make the main character, Ben, more relatable as he doesn't want to be a part of the conventional lifestyle, and wants to persue his dream of being a magician, so that he will stand out. In the short film, The Black Hole, the (only) character in it, is shown to be a part of a conventional lifestyle. He is working in a typical office, and seems to be unhappy. This makes the existance of the magical black hole have more effect. In Ferris Bueller's Day Off,  Ferris lives in a safe, house, and has a typical family and goes to a typical highschool. Despite having a conventional lifestyle, he is a free spirit. In, Edward Scissorhands, the neighborhood is conventional. This contrasts with the location of where Edward came from.
