Short film genres

Here is a list of short films genres.

  • Romance - Plots that follow passion, lust, and emotion, usually makes the audience follow the characters journey for love. Examples of short films about romance: Paperman, Pink Grapefruit, and I'm Here. 
  • Comedy/Dark Comedy - These are often lighthearted dramas and can sometimes be humorously dark but are used to make the audience laugh and usually have happy endings. Examples of short films of the comedy genre are: The Gunfighter, Yes, God, Yes, and Official Selection. 
  • Sci-Fi/Fantasy - These are often set in futuristic environments that show advances in technology, special effects are widely used throughout(Sci-Fi). Usually influenced by scientific truths and is often dependant on the audiences imagination and beliefs(Fantasy). Examples of short films in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre are: 2048: Nowhere to Run, Zygote, and Piano. 
  • Drama - Often portrays real life situations and based on real people and often used to show humans in their best and worst light. Examples of short films of the drama genre: People In Cars, I Was There Too, and Backstory. 
  • Horror - Created to scare the audience and often play on audiences worst fears. Horrors focus on the darker side of life and provoke audiences imaginations to make things worse. Examples of short films of the horror genre: Lights Out, Don't Move, and Mama. 
  • Documentary - Non fictional, factual works which are mainly narrative based. Examples of short films of the documentary genre: Ghost Bikes, No Jail Time, and Sea Pilgrim. 
  • Action/Adventure - Designed for audience escapism and often have fight scenes, stunts and continuous action that is fast paced due to editing techniques(Action). Often a lot of energy and excitement for audiences when the hero/heroine goes on an expedition. Examples of short films of the action/adventure genre are: The Duck, X-Story, and The Escape. 
  • Epics/Historical - Based on historical/past events. Epics are usually more dramatic and add elaborate costumes and settings to to emphasise the period in which they were set. Examples of short films in the epics/historical genre are: Shok, Night and Fog, and The Haircut.
