In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? During my A2 media, students had to create a short film, along with a magazine review and poster to go with it. It was our choice what the genre was. I chose to create a dark comedy (also known as black comedy) short film. In films, there are specific conventions that are followed in order for the audience to know that the film meets the audience's expectations. Dark comedy is slightly different than the type of comedy that is generally presented in films. Short films are different to feature films - there is a lot less time for character and plot development, therefore things need to develop and change quickly and simply. Something important needs to be happening almost at all times, that way the audience doesn't lose interest. This is a review of the film, Kick-Ass 2. Just in case someone didn't already know, it has "MOVIE REVIEW" at the top. The title of the film is in big, bold letters, making it easy for readers to notice. Above it, in smaller letters, it says "Starring Hit-Girl..." The fact that this is placed above the title suggests that hit-girl is the standout of the film.  A small box containing the basic movie information is located below the title. This is a necessary feature because it tells readers when the movie is released, and the age rating. Then you have the review and is placed around the 3 images used, and another important detail being the final, overall score located in the very bottom right. A score is needed mostly for readers, who don't want to read the full review, and just wanted to a simple answer of the reviewer's opinion on the film. It may convince a reader to see the film or not, depending solely on the score. The name of the reviewer is actua...

This is a magazine review of the film, New Moon. At the top, "IN CINEMAS" is displayed widely, so in case someone didn't already know, it is clear that this a film review. The picture and the title are the main focus. It is important for the title to be very noticeable, as people need to know the title in order to see the film, and if they are interested in seeing the film, immediately seeing the title, would influence them to read the review. The image is very big, clearly showing the actors. The image is relevant, because the actors are famous, and they way they are being presented, suggests romance. The quote in red, at the bottom of the page, is for readers who would just like to see a quick outline of how the reviewer thought the film was. There is a slightly more in depth summary, in the bottom right of the page, which the star rating below it. Dark red lines separate each part of the review, making it more organised.

This is my film poster for my short film, that I created. I researched real film posters to get inspiration and know the conventions. The image of the character on the poster is from a screenshot I got from my footage. Because the background of the image would look unprofessional, I edited it on adobe photoshop. I also added an effect to the image of him, symbolising real magician posters, as a lot of them, have a drawn picture, rather than a photograph. I suggested that the short film is about a magician, as he is wearing a cloak and a hat, there is a glow effect around him, and under the title there is the caption, "Prepare to be amazed!" I put the actors names at the top, and under put a review, that has the genre stated, star ratings, and two awards on each side of the title. I also have the credit box at the bottom, and the names of the companies next to it.

This is a poster for the film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The main cast are shown clearly, one of them at the front, suggesting he is the main character. He is holding a wand, which is clearly shown. This suggests that the film is about magic. The cast's appearances are old fashioned, which suggests that the film is based in the past. "from J.K. Rowling's Wizarding world" is stated above the title. J.K. Rowling is the author of the Harry Potter books, and because of the huge popularity of the Harry Potter franchise, it makes sense to mention that this film is part of the same world. There are four, five star reviews at the the top of the poster, and stating the name of the review source. This obviously could influence people to watch the film, seeing that it has been received well. This is a poster for the film, Baby Driver. The film's genre is crime/action. This is shown through the image on he poster. We see a picture of a car speeding, which suggests action. We also see two characters, each holding a gun, which suggests crime. The main cast is shown clearly, and the main character, played by Ansel Elgort, is the biggest on the poster, which suggests he is the main character. We see the names of each cast member, at the side of the image, and can see the names clearly (their last names are stated wider). The title, "BABY DRIVER" is stated, widely and clearly, near the bottom, at the side. Smaller, the director's name is stated above the title. Below the title, small, but clearly, there is a caption - "ALL YOU NEED IS ONE KILLER TRACK" which connects to it being about crime. At the bottom of the poster, the release date is stated. It is not very noticeable but you can see it, if you are looking for it.

This is the poster of "The Invincible Ian" in my short film, Abracadabra. I took a picture of my brother in the cloak and hat I got, and the wand I got. I had him wear that shirt, as it is the type that a magician would wear. I made sure his hand, holding the wand was close to the camera, because that it is important in the short film. It is what leads to Ben being able to do magic. I uploaded the picture of photoshop, and edited it on there. I added the glow effect on the wand to represent magic, and added the glow effect around him to make it seem that he has a lot of skill/power. I have the caption "The Invincible Ian" at the top, with big letters, because having the name of the person/thing in big letters is a convention of posters.

This is a poster for the film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Harry is at the front of the image, indicating he is the main character. Ron and Hermione close behind him, indicating they are also main characters. All of them are holding wands, which represents that the film is about magic. The mix of bright and dark blue as the background suggests a fantasy world. We see "Harry Potter" clearly, with big letters, in the centre of the poster.  "And the Order of the Phoenix" is with small letters, meaning it is not necessary for the audience to see that part. It says "coming soon" at the centre of the bottom, with small letters. Although it is useful for the audience to have an idea, it does not say when exactly the film is being released. If it did, perhaps it would be more clear in the poster.

This is the poster for the film, Scream. The image and the caption at the top makes it clear that the genre is horror/thriller. The image is an extreme close-up of a girl looking scared. Her eyes are the only things that are not black or white in the poster, and they are blue, which is a cold colour. Because her skin is white and her eyes are blue, this suggests coldness. I think it is suggesting her being "frozen" with fear and being helpless. The caption is "Someone has taken their love of scary movies one step too far. Solving this mystery is going to be murder." This clearly suggests that there is a murderer in this film. It is easy to see the title, as there are big letter under the image, going from each end, through the centre. Under the title, the cast is listen. Their names are stated with small letters, indicating that the cast isn't as important for the audience to know as the title. In order to create a poster for my short film, Abracadabra, it is important I research what actual film posters are like. Conventions of film posters: must be eye-catching and captivating to the audience  must be a focal picture that will draw in the audience eye  title displayed in a large, eye-catching font  clearly defines the film genre  should be designed to attract the largest audience possible  usually an indication of when the film is being released - either a date or 'Coming soon', although they are sometimes less specific, for example they might say "In cinemas this summer"  information on the directors and production company is often displayed in a billing block at the bottom of the poster  there could be reviews or titles of other films that the company has made
